Back of the net!

And so here's the new Stockwell Stadium. What it lacks in wanky sponsorship branding, it sure makes up for in SW8 spirit. And that spirit was in full flow as I took these photos with South London Yoof playing a bit of football, getting bored and then buggering off for his finger of fudge with some fragrant young lady.

The Stones are playing Stockwell

Yep, the new astroturf pitch at Larkhall Park is lovely. It was officially opened last month by West Ham's Anton Ferdinand (brother of Rio, blah blah blah...) E13 is not quite under the Sunny Stockwell boundary, but Rio's brother is by birth a South London geezer anyway.

Search for Stockwell Stadium and you'll draw a blank. That's the re-branding at work that has been carried out by onionbagblog. Officially the new facility is known as the UK Nike Grind Football Pitch.

Urghhh.

Snazzy title, load of shite when you dig a little deeper.

The manufacturers of inferior footwear claim that the pitch is 'revolutionary' and one of just sixteen of its kind in the world. Not so much old hat, but old trainers. Made out of recycled Nike trainers, the surface is one of the first ecology friendly football pitches in London.

I mentioned this to South London Yoof as he walked off with his new lady friend.

'Fuck off, bro,' was the level of interest generated by the Nike knobbers in their ecology pitch.

And who can be sure that a little bit of sabotage has not been undertaken? What if a stray adidas trainer was thrown into the mix? That would be my excuse if I failed to perform in front of goal at the new Stockwell Stadium.

It's meant that my beloved Larkhall Park *shhh* Secret Garden is now sitting underneath a mashed up pile of tatty old trainers. But the garden was so secret that no one ever used it anyway. Not even South London Yoof.

Meanwhile the main turfed football pitch at Larkhall Park has also had a facelift, jointly financed by the FA and Fulham Football Club of SW8 SW6. There's not a lot of cottaging going off around Larkhall compared to Clap'ham, but the Cottagers do use the park as part of their Football in the Community scheme.

The pitch is actually looking rather lush. It has been fenced off since mid-March when the new turf was first laid. Locals have been respecting the no go area, and now we're all free to have BBQ's, leave broken bottles and encourage the SW8 canines to use it as a shitter.

It meant the cancellation of the Stockwell Festival this summer. It wouldn't be the same holding it in say, Camberwell. But hopefully it will be back next summer and just as bonkers.

With Wembley still looking a bit wobbly, we may even get the Stones playing at Stockwell Stadium.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, as South London Yoof said when he emerged from the bushes, bruv.
